Doug will be posting an article in the next couple weeks asking for suggestions for his next car purchase. What do you all think it should be? Supercar? Truck? Rally special? Let’s hear it.

I think he needs to get a first generation Viper.

Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer

There we go! I was going to suggest one that was on fire but that’s about as good.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 13:59 |

Because why the hell wouldn’t you want a blobified “luxury” Aztek?

Supercar: Check.
Off roader: Check.
Super Wagon: Check.
25 Year old Classic: Check.
Unreliable British car: Check, Check, Check.
So I say something old, really old. Something pre-war perhaps.

DONK
It may be the only vehicle tougher to live with than a Hummer.

Early 90s NSX, some sort of minivan, maybe jump into the two wheeled world of motorcycles.

I want Doug to handle maintaining and owning an old 60s/70s muscle/pony car.
Preferably a fire-snorting big-block.

Hydroformed independent rear suspension?
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:05 |

What do we figure the budget will be? $70k ish?
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:05 |
|
As old as possible. Definitely pre-war, hopefully something from the 20’s or 30’s.
A 32 Ford or something like that. Maybe an old V-16 Cadillac if those are in the budget (full disclosure: I have no idea what a pre-war caddy goes for in any condition. It is probably out of his budget, but the more clapped out it is, the more fun for us!)

i say another import preferably tiny and cute like a Honda beat. the skyline looked to much like an accord for most people to notice or care. That or a classic American like a corvette

Yeah, I think that can be safely assumed.

Well now it’s not even interesting anymore. At least the Asstek had hideousness as an engagement tool. What does this have? Chrome trim? Tire-sized headlights?
Haaaard Paaaaass.

I think something like this would be wild. 40's Ford Deluxe
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:16 |

That’s what I was thinking! Actually, the first thing that popped into mind was Doug trying to crank-start some old jalopy by the side of the road. I guess I’m a sadist.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:17 |

I think Doug need a race car.
As others have pointed out, he’s checked many boxes off on the list of various types of vehicles you can own/drive on the street. I think it’s time that Doug took his journalistic antics off of the thoroughfare and tried his hand at the race track. Now what kind of race car? Hmmm... for the sake of entertainment value I wanna see him in either a dirt circle track car or rally car.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:18 |
|
He hasn’t tried a muscle car yet. Like a proper late 60s, 70s. Would love to see his perspective on the communities (Mopar, etc.), restomod vs. OEM/factory, etc.

inb4 Ferarri Berlinetta Boxer
But srsly, Syclone. As always.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:19 |

NSX won’t happen. He’s already done the ‘90s tuner dream car. As much as I’d love to see more NA1 NSXs featured on here, there’s too little variance, from a journalistic standpoint, from the car he just got done with.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:20 |

Disagree, the Aztek at least looked like it was designed to look as it did, the Rendezvous looks like someone glued some Buick bits onto an Aztek. Makes it look even worse IMO.

Holy crap. I live about 10 minutes from that shop. I should stop by and check it out.

I want to see him DD a race car. Full cage, no interior, barely legal exhaust, a million horsepower...
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:28 |
|
That should go swimmingly in PA/NJ winter.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:28 |

In that case, a Boss 302.
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/de…
Most seem to be a bit over $70, but failing that, a 351 Mach 1 would suffice for under $60k.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:29 |
|
Ha I don’t think he can fit in a Beat.
That being said, he should definitely import a Kei car. Good way to determine what it’s like to live with a tiny 660CC toy car.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:30 |
|
I don’t think he’ll take any of our suggestions. If he does it’s a coincidence.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:31 |

A real AC Cobra would make quite the conversation piece.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:31 |
|
Would be cool, but unlikely with the inherent dangers of daily driving a caged race ready car. They don’t fare quite so well in normal car accidents, especially without wearing all the proper safety gear. If you can convince Doug to rock a helmet and HANS device every day though... lol
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:32 |
|
That’s not what that is.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:32 |

Something old, small, and slow.

I think it’s going to be an Electric.
I had this suspicion before, and it was only increased after he posted about the Nissan Leaf’s depreciation, meaning he was browsing it on Autotrader.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:34 |

Excellent point. I always forget about that whole side-impact skull-cage thing.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:35 |

I think it’s time that DD taps into his inner Bro.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:35 |

Hindustan Ambassador
Lada
French import
Full blown rally car
Honda Beat
Diahatsu Midget
Slammed/hellaflush douchebro car
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:36 |

Yeah. Also, that harness bar that the belts strap to has to move somewhere in a side impact collision. So you’re taking about a 50/50 chance of being speared in the back by that too. :/
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:38 |
|
The time has passed, but I think he should have rushed out and bought a 2009-2014 TDI.
Perfect for what he needs. Something to write a lot of words about.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:38 |

We him to get something exciting, not have him commit suicide.

We are just brainstorming before it's actually time!
![]() 11/23/2015 at 14:56 |

As mentioned elsewhere, the only correct answer is the 600 horsepower rally Volvo of death

Halo seats. Problem solved ;)

Rally fighter.
Or some other sort of kit. Ariel Atom. Factory Five 818 Coupe.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:00 |

Still an issue of that rear bar relocating into your spine though :/
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:08 |

You’re not the boss of us, Doug.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:10 |

Next time, only mention you’re looking for a new car at the exact time you actually want to know. Now it’s just going to be weeks of speculation and by then we’ll have suggested every vehicle in existence because (for some reason) different people like different cars.
That said, there’s nothing enthusiasts seem to enjoy more than suggesting their favourite vehicles to everyone for whatever reason, so we’ll be more than happy to oblige when you officially ask this question.
Also, a CarMax warrantied Jaguar is best, maybe an XF-R if you can find one.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:17 |
|
He’s got two choices,
Diesel 4x4 bro truck (maybe that’s to similar to the Hummer)
or motorcycle, to maximize entertainment it should be either a liter bike, or a large H-D cruiser
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:18 |

Citroen 2CV?
I just had Mrs. addiction watch the video of Harris’ (after seeing the 2CV in Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown, one of her old favorites).
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:20 |
|
When you harness bar are you talking the bolt-on kind or the ones that are structurally tied into the cage? Because I’ve seen the later take some absolutely brutal side impacts and the bar breaking and penetrating the seat has never remotely been an issue
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:27 |
|
But there are mods!
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:30 |
|
I’d say it’s much more of a risk with a bolt-on, or even welded in, single harness bar. However, even with one that’s structurally built into a cage you are introducing an element behind that driver that could potentially move in the event of a side impact collision. But I’d say the risk is definitely minimal with a properly built roll cage.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:37 |
|
Maybe its just me, but I don’t find him as funny as he used to be.
So probably not anything in particular
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:39 |
|
I’m not sure if he should replace the GT-R with my suggestion, or the Land Rover, but here it is:
Yes, they actually made them and imported them to the US. It hits a bunch of Doug’s weakness:
-rare
-fast & powerful
-comfortable
-no one will know what it is
-laughably unreliable (definitely buy the Carmax warranty)
-politically incorrect (because Dieselgate)
Think of the comedy that could stem from assholes on the street leaving him notes, it breaking down, it going off road, and people being amazed at what’s under the hood. It would be like a Bizarro version of the Hummer.
Alternately, a Phaeton with a W12 or Passat W8, for most of the same reasons.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:47 |
|
Ooh, that works!
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:48 |
|
Which, after dyno day, is apparently true after all!
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:53 |
|
Top speed is like high 30s (with a tailwind).
They probably don’t like sitting around in stop & go traffic, either.
![]() 11/23/2015 at 15:55 |
|
S600 !
![]() 11/23/2015 at 22:39 |
|
Well the real point is to stick him with something that’s nearly impossible to live with - or so we thought.
Thus my vote will be a 2CV.
Preferably the original 375cc with 9HP.
![]() 11/24/2015 at 09:09 |

SVT Lightning.
![]() 11/24/2015 at 20:47 |

Depends on who did the conversion, and how stupid the paint job is.
this would be pretty bad
This I’d daily.
![]() 11/24/2015 at 20:53 |
|
Yeah, but it’s not
really
a donk without your favorite cereal or candy on the side. Otherwise, it’s just a hi-riser. That’s too easy for Doug.
![]() 11/24/2015 at 20:58 |

I liked this one. It woul be a very different beast to the Ferrari or Skyline, probably somewhere in-between them and the Hummer really.
![]() 11/25/2015 at 14:14 |
|
he could get like a fleet of them!
